Supporting KS2 learning at home

Small, purposeful routines for parents of children in Years 3–6.

Begin with a conversation

Ask which school task felt comfortable and which felt confusing. Use the exercise book or teacher feedback to choose one small priority. Do not turn every home activity into a test.

Talk about reading

Read an appropriate short text together. Ask what happened, how a character might feel and which words support the idea. Help with vocabulary, then give the child space to explain in their own words.

Make maths visible

Use drawings or everyday quantities to discuss an idea. For fractions, compare equal parts of the same whole. For a calculation, ask why a method fits and how the result could be checked.

Keep writing purposeful

Write a short description, message or explanation. Review one feature at a time: the idea, sentence clarity or a punctuation choice. A longer piece is not automatically more useful.

Keep the routine manageable

Choose a short activity and a later check. Notice effort, strategies and growing independence. If a difficulty repeats, share a specific example with the teacher or tutor rather than ask for more worksheets.

Year 6 and Year 7

Discuss the school’s assessment preparation and transition plan. Practise asking for help, organising materials and following a small plan. Balance this with rest and activities the child enjoys.
