VERITY LEARNING
Our tutor standard
The expectations used to assess suitability and sustain good teaching.
Before a placement
- Verify identity and relevant qualifications.
- Review references, teaching experience and subject knowledge.
- Discuss curriculum fit and demonstrate an explanation.
- Consider DBS eligibility and relevant safeguarding checks for the role.
- Explain professional boundaries, communication and online safety expectations.
Suitability for the expanded age range
For KS2, assess age-appropriate explanations, concrete examples, reading and writing support, manageable activities and communication with parents. For GCSE Combined Science, check knowledge of the exact specification and the ability to teach across biology, chemistry and physics. A qualification in a different subject does not establish suitability for either role.
During tutoring
- Use an agreed starting point and clear lesson priorities.
- Give feedback that helps the student improve a specific action.
- Record the skills worked on, independence shown and next steps.
- Communicate through agreed channels and protect personal information.
- Escalate welfare concerns promptly through the safeguarding route.
These are service standards, not a statement that an unnamed tutor has completed every check. Parents should receive the individual tutor’s check information before the placement is confirmed.
