FREE MATHS GUIDE

Foundation or Higher GCSE maths?

Understand the course discussion and involve the school in a tier decision.

Know the specification

For AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300, Foundation normally assesses grades 1–5 and Higher grades 4–9. Use the current specification for the student’s own board rather than assume every qualification is identical.

Look beyond one result

Consider recent independent work, topic coverage, consistency and teacher advice. One mock mark or a preferred target does not settle the right tier.

Ask practical questions

Which skills are secure? Which Higher content has been taught? Where are the repeated errors? How will the school make and review its entry decision?

Plan suitable support

A tutor can work on the agreed course and strengthen gaps. The school determines the examination entry. Do not switch revision materials or tier assumptions without checking that decision.

Try this next

Choose one action from this guide, try it on a fresh piece of work and note what you can do independently. Bring the work and one specific question to your teacher or tutor.
