Make revision more active.
Find out what you know by trying to retrieve and use it.
STEP 01
Begin with a question.
Instead of only rereading a page, close it and explain the idea aloud, write what you remember or answer a short question. The attempt helps show where your understanding is secure and where it needs work.
STEP 02
Check and correct.
Compare your answer with a reliable explanation, mark scheme or teacher feedback. Correct errors clearly. An incorrect answer is useful when it tells you what to work on next.
STEP 03
Match the activity to the subject.
In Maths, solve a fresh problem and show your working. In English, explain how a quotation supports an interpretation. In Business, apply a concept to a short case rather than only recalling a definition.
STEP 04
Return to the difficult parts.
Revisit challenging questions on another day and attempt them again without the answer visible. Mix in earlier topics to see whether you can still use them.
STEP 05
Go beyond flashcards.
Flashcards can help with definitions and key facts. Longer responses also need planning, application and practice. Ask a tutor or teacher to help you judge the quality of your reasoning.
