Building a GCSE Literature paragraph

A focused argument, relevant evidence and an explanation that develops it.

Make an arguable point

Answer the precise question with an idea about the text. A plot summary can orient the reader, but it should not replace the argument.

Use brief evidence

Choose a word, phrase or reference that supports the point. Integrate it into the sentence and keep the context clear.

Develop the interpretation

Explain how the writer’s choices create meaning. Connect to a relevant part of the wider text where the task calls for it. Use context to support an interpretation, not as a detached history paragraph.

Review the paragraph

Can you identify the point, evidence and reasoning? Does each sentence move the argument forward? Improve relevance and clarity before adding length. A paragraph framework is a scaffold, not a mandatory formula.
